We believe that investing in the education and empowerment

FranCine Gadsden was born in Brooklyn, NY; third youngest of 14 children. She was introduced to fashion at the age of ten where her first sewing project was an apron. FranCine knew that she wanted to become a designer. After FranCine graduated from the International School of Design in Manhattan, NY, she was given the opportunity to work for Audrey Smaltz Inc. (ASI/Ground Crew); a fashion company that coordinated backstage services and fashion editorials, allowing her to work with Donna Karan, Adrienne Vittadini, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Givenchy. and other top designers. FranCine relocated to Northern California, where she introduced FranCine’s Fashions 4 Children. FranCine's fashions were featured on Pacific Bell’s Message Center commercials, Mornings on 2 (KTVU), The Wall Street Journal, Essence Magazine, Black Child Magazine, The San Francisco Examiner, The Oakland Tribune, Wee Poets Television Show, and Barney and Friends. The collection was featured and sold in Northern California in Nordstrom and Macy’s stores during Black History Month and nationwide, in several children specialty stores year round. In 2015, FranCine developed Sticks and Stones Tees & Mores where she creates and prints her origin artwork and thought-provoking words on tees, hoodies, and home accessories, allowing both the wearer and viewer to be encouraged. Sticks and Stones' most renowned image is Afro Puff Gurl © 2015. APGPA was established from a place of love when FranCine saw little girls reacting to the image of the Afro Puff Gurl printed on tees, hoodies, and accessories she had created and knew that she needed to do more with the image.
FranCine believes that investing in the education and empowerment of Black and Brown girls is essential to building strong, resilient communities and to create a positive impact by fostering a culture of self-love, confidence, and resilience that will benefit girls throughout their lives.

Family Business - Father and Daughter
Nieves Cinco de Mayo
For many years, Luis had a vision of opening and operating his own landmark ice cream shop like the one from his native Guadalajara. With some entrepreneurial experience under his belt, he applied to open an ice cream store in the Fruitvale Public Market (Oakland, CA). Luis was accepted into the incubator program and was so enthusiastic about creating his own artisan ice creams, that he traveled to Mexico twice to take classes. As part of his business model, Luis planned for his family to play an important role in the enterprise. He opened Nieves Cinco de Mayo in 2008. With his parents by his side, his mother worked the cash register and his father promoted the business. Now to date, Luis has two locations in Oakland, CA and one location in San Francisco, CA. Two of his daughters, Griselda and Emily, joined forces in their father's business. The business has expanded; yet remains family centered. Their ice cream is made by hand with flavors from vanilla to more exotic selections like rum raisin.
Nieves Cinco de Mayo was featured on KPIX, The East Bay Express, The Contra Costa Times and San Francisco Magazine.
